San Judas Matchbox

This style of devotional artwork, known as Retablo in Spanish, features intricate hand paintings of Saint Jude on the outside of each matchbox and a ceramic figure of the Saint on the inside. Saint Jude is also known as Jude the Apostle, Thaddeus and Lebbaeus. He is not to be confused with Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus prior to his crucifixion. He is pictured on the matchbox here with an axe or halberd, the method of his martydom. Saint Jude is particularly venerated in Central and South American Catholicism.
