When depicting Buddha, the positioning of the hands (Mudra) is very important and different mudra represent different things. Here, Buddha is shown in the Vitarka mudra ('the murda of discussion') and this represents the discussion and transmission of Buddhist teachings. The sitting position (Asana) for this Buddha is the full lotus position with each foot resting on the thigh of the other leg with the soles facing upwards. This meditative asana is known as Dhyana Asana or Padmasana.
Buddhism is the story of one man's spiritual journey to Enlightenment, and of the teachings and ways of living that developed from it. Buddha was born as prince Siddhartha Guatama, and was led from the pain of suffering and rebirth towards the path of Enlightenment to become known as the Buddha or 'awakened one.'
Each Buddha is carved by hand and therefore variation is to be expected.
